Whether you are a chair of the Board or a shift manager, you will know by now that when conflict arises in any workplace between two or more people, then the results are always:

  1. The culture in the workplace is effected.

  2. The staff involved don’t enjoy coming to work anymore.

  3. Mental health of those involved can be effected - giving rise to concerns about new psycho-social hazards in the workplace.

  4. The staff involved might take leave which means there are gaps in the work completed.

  5. The bottom line will be effected.

Over the years I have seen lots of CEO’s managers and HR leaders have a go at resolving the conflict, but there are a couple of reasons why that is not working well.

  1. Usually a staff person involved in conflict will assume that the leader has a preference for who “wins” - that is, the leader appears biased.

  2. Often the leader is inundated with lots of work and has not got the sufficient time to address these long meetings in trying to resolve conflict.

  3. If one party is just sacked to “fix” the problem, costs arise in finding, onboarding and training a new employee.
